Medical Providers

Healthcare

Everyone deserves equal access to healthcare. Unfortunately, it is not always easy for people within the LGBTQ+ community to find healthcare providers who are unbiased and willing to treat them equally. That is why it is important for us to have a local list of healthcare providers who we know are friendly and accommodating to those within the LGBTQ+ community. Every voice deserves to be heard and every person deserves to have equal access to quality healthcare. No one should fear seeking medical attention because they don’t know who they can trust.

“Every person—regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation—deserves comprehensive, safe and compassionate health care.” – Amber Richert

Healthcare Providers

Below you will find  LGBTQ+ friendly medical providers . We will be trying to keep the providers as local as possible, but with sometimes limiting resources available to a small community, we may update this list to include providers who are a little further out than the 35 mile radius we would like. Addresses will be listed so that you can reference that when considering a provider. If they also provide services for transgender individuals, that will be notated.

Virginia Rural Health Association

Virginia Rural Health Association has an extensive list of services that are listed here.

Everything from Youth Services to Legal help.

Pride of Rural Virginia (PRV) is a grant-funded initiative to address LGBTQIA+ health & healthcare priorities in rural areas across Virginia. Our goal is to promote healthcare settings which provide safe and affirming environments and offer training and resources to providers who need more guidance on welcoming the LGBTQIA+ community.

The PRVider Portal is an anonymous, safe space to share your personal experiences with healthcare providers. The more information we receive from the community, the better we can create and disseminate the tools needed to address current and future health needs for LGBTQIA+ persons in rural Virginia.

Claudia Methvin, MD, PLLC

“There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to healthcare. I LISTEN, and try to get to know you on a personal basis to best meet your needs in educating and motivating you in your pursuit of health.”

In her rare spare time, she enjoys gardening, cooking, entertaining, fishing, photography, and keeping up with her family of friends scattered far and wide. She is an avid naturalist and enjoys learning new species of birds and plants.

Born and raised in McLean, Virginia, Dr. Methvin attended Langley High School and the University of Virginia. She moved to San Francisco after college and spent three years taking classes and doing social psychology research at UCSF. She attended medical school at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana and then completed her residency in Family Medicine in Asheville, North Carolina at Mountain Area Health Education Center. She then moved to Shenandoah County, where she has lived since 2002.

Dr. Methvin is married to John Trent, an attorney, and has two adult stepchildren, two dogs, four cats, and a bunch of chickens. They live in an old farmhouse in the first of the Seven Bends of the North Fork.
